Filmmaking as defined in our previous article I WANT TO BE A FULL TIME FILMMAKER as the Art of telling stories through audio/visual devices for Cinema or TV commercials and anyone who can tell a story through this medium is a Filmmaker (Producer, Director, Executives etc), However they are divers functionalities involve in the making process which today we will be looking into Art/Craft directing process

Art and Craft directing is uncommon among developing directors or most performance directors who's focus is directing actors performance, although in big budget Art/Craft directors maybe hired separately, but is very important for a professional director to function in various capacity to ensure nothing goes out of vision

Craft directing centres on ability to control and properly make use of materials assemble for field production to post production to fully actualise final results. Previously on our article 👉INSIGHT TO FILM DIRECTING  we saw the function of art/craft directing in the ability to technically use materials, equipment, lights, sound to proper record and capture actions on set.

Most developing directors fail in this; actors delivery without controlling, correcting,monitoring and supervising how performance are Recorded and captured, errors will be inevitable during or after field production

Note!! It is very possible for a technical director to function as a performance director and also as a craft director since he is the original visual planner of the project vision. Also a performance director can function as a craft director working with each creative department with the materials, equipments available to evict errors

UNDERSTANDING CINEMATOGRAPHY

Basic and advance knowledge on cinematography as an art/craft director is very important to capture best expected results. What camera type or standard suits the production, prescribed camera lenses and why, understanding camera exposure circle, cam shot types(sizes), Camera movement  effectively helps art/craft director to communicate, control and correct how performance should be recorded and captured

LIGHTENING

Very importantly for an art/craft director is to understand lightening than relying on gaffer's who work according to what is communicated to them. Is not just having the set lighten for expose shots but understanding why!!

Lightening adds meaning, feelings and mode, understanding Lightening type, color combination, light  positioning,  helps art/craft director to communicate, control and correct gaffer's on the lightening mode of each specific scene for better results. EDITING

Final film directing is in edit, directing the film with stylish editing skills create more Visual meaning. An art/craft director most not necessarily be an editor but having basic knowledge of choice of cuts and transitions within and between scenes and color grading style helps direct the film more cinematic than lining up scene accordingly. This is where Professionals are separated

SOUND DESIGN

Perfect sound quality (Dialogue audio, sound effects, sound tracks, sound score etc) will properly be achieve when an art/craft director understands the mechanism to put in place then communicate, correct and control the Sound Department to match up expectations
